About the Lower School
Salcombe Lower School: Inspiring the Love of Learning
The Lower School Environment: Class teachers remain with their class for most subjects with subject specialists providing classes in Music and French. In this way our smallest children begin their schooling in a nurturing environment where their Form Teacher knows and understands their personalities, differences and needs. Lower School classrooms are productive environments where children co-operate happily and well.
Children: Our children exhibit a sense of enthusiasm for and enjoyment of learning. As a general rule, our pupils show very good levels of on task behaviour and skills in self-management and self discipline develop throughout their time in the Lower School. Generally our new children settle quickly, happily and well to School. New entrants are given 'buddies' to help them find their way around the Lower School. Buddies develop into friends and soon other new friendships are made.
Settling in a new Pupil: However, as in all schools, some children find it quite upsetting to remain at their new school without the comfort of their parents. As the parent of a new child it can be most difficult to leave when your little one is fretful and reluctant to stay. Please know that our teachers are skilled in methods of distraction and will work quickly to involve the new pupil in an activity that will take his or her attention.
Teachers: Our teachers plan collegially to ensure sound teaching and learning programmes which will enable all children to make good progress, support those with learning difficulties and which will challenge and extend those most able academically. Effective teaching throughout the Lower School results in pupils who are motivated to learn and prepared for lessons.
