About the Upper School

Salcombe Upper School: Inspiring the Love of Learning

The Upper School Environment: Upper School classrooms are productive environments where children work diligently, co-operate happily and  are developing into reliable and responsible young people. Each class has a class Form Teacher who has a co-ordinating role and a pastoral responsibility to the children in their class. Parents are able to talk to the Form Teacher in the first instance for pastoral help and guidance.

The Curriculum: In order to provide the best possible tuition in the lead up to the 11+ examinations to selective secondary schools in Year 6, teaching is largely by subject specialists across the curriculum. Subject Specialists teach English, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), French, Physical Education, Art, Design Technology, Music, Drama, and Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

Children: Our children exhibit a sense of enthusiasm for and enjoyment of learning. As a general rule, our pupils show very good levels of on task behaviour and their skills in self-management and self discipline are developing  as they move through the Upper School.  New children  settle quickly, happily and well into the Upper School where as in the Lower School new entrants are given 'buddies' to help them find their way around. As a rule new friendships are made quickly.

Teachers:  Our teachers plan collegially in subject areas to ensure sound teaching and learning programmes which will enable all children to make good progress, support those with learning difficulties and which will challenge and extend those most able academically. Effective teaching throughout the Upper School results in pupils who are motivated to learn and prepared for lessons.
