Art
KS2 Art Coordinator; Christiana Pascalidis
'Pupils use colour, form, texture, pattern and different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think. Through art and design activities, they learn to make informed value judgements and aesthetic and practical decisions, becoming actively involved in shaping environments. They explore ideas and meanings in the work of artists, craftspeople and designers. They learn about the diverse roles and functions of art, craft and design in contemporary life, and in different times and cultures. Understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts have the power to enrich our personal and public lives.' The National Art Curriculum
Salcombe's Art programmes are designed to stimulate creativity and imagination by providing visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the world. We cover exploration in both2D and 3D media and also study social and historical art movements through the ages. From time to time, the curriculum is enhanced by visits to London's art galleries and museums as well as observational studies often conducted on outdoor sketching days.
In each of the three terms, all classes study the use of similar media within different contexts and using different techniques. For example 'Drawing and Painting' using a selection of such media as pencil, graphite, charcoal, chalk, oil and soft pastels, pen and paint, our children learn over the course of their time at Salcombe, such techniques as sketching, still life, figure drawing, portraits, colour mixing and the importance of composition.
Year 3: Children cover such techniques as still life drawing objects that are meaningful to them, printing , collage, papier mache and clay sculpting.
Year 4: Pupils cover such techniques as still life drawing symbols of interest to them, relief printing and mosaics as wel as clay and papier mache work.
Year 5 and 6: Sculpt with clay and mud rock, build mosaics using tiles, print making and paper sculpture making such art works as masks, pots, tiles and free-standing art work.
Art & Design Technology are is assessed within the school setting, but does not form part of examinations for selective secondary schools at 11+ years.
