The Lower School: The emphasis in Lower School is on making language accessible and fun, and is achieved through the use of media, games, and visual stimuli. Topic areas include such things as numbers, colours, food, and animals.
The Upper School: In Years 3 - 6 the emphasis is on verbal communication including speaking and listening-based tasks. As pupils gain fluency they are involved in simple literacy tasks which support the development of their oral work.
Year3: Children learn to name the days of the week and the months, as well as count to 20 in French. In addition they learn the names of articles of clothing as well as the names of common animals.
Year 4: Children do comprehension experiences and begin to write simple stories in French. Regular French Picnics are highlights.
Year 5: Shops, shopping and food are the main topics along with the study of famous French people including Louis Braille, Claude Monet and Louis Pasteur.
Year 6: Grammar and vocabulary are emphaisised as we ready pupils for entry to their chosen secondary schools.
French Trips: Whilst cultural awareness is promoted at every opportunity, children in Years 5 and 6 experience residential and day trips respectively. Such trips provide invaluable linguistic and cross-curricular experiences. Children participating in the Year 5 day trip experience shopping in the Lille Christmas Markets. The Year 6 children week long residential experience enables opportunities for pupils to practice their French on a daily basis.
