Boys' Games Coordinator: Mr David Valerio
Games play an important part in the life of our School. Competitive sports are encouraged and we play frequent fixtures against other schools and we are involved in a variety of tournaments also. Salcombe makes good use facilities, sports grounds and parks all within walking distance of our School.
Salcombe has a varied and carefully structured Games programme which enables our children are to develop their skills and to improve their fitness levels. Girls and boys follow similar Games programmes although skills taught may be adapted to suit the sports each group is taught. Upper School pupils have an afternoon Games session once a week during school hours
Year 3: Pupils cover variety of sports including football, hockey, netball, rugby, athletics and cricket. The rules of the game and sportsmanship are the main targets throughout the year. Where possible all pupils learn the basic skills in each sport such as passing and shooting.
Year 4: Pupils build on the sports skills covered in the previous year. In addition to learning rules and sportsmanship, more sport specific skills are introduced such as stick handling in hockey. Eye-hand coordination continues to be covered though it is applied to sport specific skills. Cardiovascular fitness is continued and children are encouraged to participate in extra- curricular cross country running competitions. Stretching continues in Year 4 and plays a larger role in preparing for exercise with more stretched introduced.
Year 5: In addition to the aforementioned sports, basketball is added to the curriculum. Pupils begin mastery of sport- specific skills as well as learning strategies that are particular to the sport being covered. Pupils begin to broaden their knowledge of each sport and learn defensive techniques as well. Cardiovascular fitness is emphasised and stretching is taken to a new level as pupil are encouraged to design their own stretching routines.
Year 6: pupils continue to cover the sports they have done in Year 5. More emphasis is placed on actual in-game experience as pupils, by this point, will have gained sufficient proficiency in sport- specific skills. How to use your team mate effectively during a game is a skill that is also covered. Pupils also look at the link between cardiovascular fitness and sport performance.
