Geography
KS 2 Geography Coordinator: Mr Nigel Watson
Geography is varied throughout the Upper School and many different skills are taught. We make the most of our proximity to the world-class centres of learning in Central London such as The British Library whose maps curator provides an invaluable source of information at all levels.
Year 3: Pupils study topics including cmpass directions, the seasons areound the world and the Continents and Oceans.
Year 4: Studies for this year group have a distinctly 'watery' theme. Topics covered include obtaining clean water, the hydrological cycle and rivers. Weather and climate are also studied as are the British Isles.
Year 5: 'Land Use' is the main area of study. The children learn how to draw and use maps, investigate shop location and learnabout how life differs in rural areas and small towns. They aslo investigate rainforests and take part in a debate on the future of Indonesian Rainforests.
Year 6: Tectonic Processes are studied and pupils investigate natural hazards. Map skills are taught including six figure grid references, latitude, longtitude and time zones are also studied. Subsistence agriculture is investigated which leads into studying migration and urbanisation.
Although examined within school from Year 3, Geography is not generally included in the 11+ examinations for entry into senior schools.
