Homework Policy

  • Homework is a valuable feature of the learning process, contributing to the development of good independent study/work patterns when used constructively.
  • Homework is given daily to:
    • assist the development of good study and work habits.
    • provide younger children with reading mileage
    • provide practice opportunities for basic fact, spelling , reading etc
    • provide older students particularly with the opportunity to practise new learning and to reinforce skills and strategies.

Home Practices to be encouraged

  • Children should have their own quiet place in which to do their homework;
  • Children should work conscientiously, in a focussed manner and produce their own work; and
  • should children finish within the suggested times, extra reading or revision of basic facts for speed and accuracy should be encouraged.

The Parents' Role

  • Parents are encouraged to take great interest in their child's homework giving support and guidance and monitoring daily progress;
  • Parents are asked to sign the homework books each evening to show due effort, that is a concentrated and diligent effort has been made;
  • Parents may aid their children in researching homework, however work should be the child's own and parents should be encouraged not to correct, or write homework for their children;
  • Parents may teach a skill such as punctuation where they are confident and understand the teaching methodology of the School; and
  • If homework is taking longer than suggested the teacher should be informed. A note in the homework book is acceptable.

Homework completion: Homework is expected to be comleted on the night givne or over the period allocated by the teacher. Should homework not be completed within the allotted time, parents are asked to write an explanatory  note to the teacher, in the homework diary, so that we know your child has made a solid effort to compete the task within the allotted guide time.

Year 6 parents:  please note that, whilst there will be some homework in all subjects for each week, greater emphasis will be placed upon English and Mathematics during this Autumn Term and leading up to the selective secondary school entrance examinations.
