Music
Lower School Music Teacher: Mrs Jayne James,
Upper School Music Teacher: Mrs Elena Browne
Music is an important part in the life of the School. We seize the opportunity for pupils of all abilities.
Salcombe's Music Programmes provide pupils with the opportunity to explore a wide range of musical styles, as well as learning to read and write music. Creativity is fostered as pupils produce their own pieces using a variety of different instruments. Lower School pupils focus on exploring percussion instruments, group singing and movement to music. From Year 3 pupils learn the recorder and can enter a school choir.
We provide a wide range of different performance opportunities including concerts, assemblies and performance at other important school occasions where pupils can benefit from the challenge of performing publicly as soloists, in small groups, and as members of their class. Auditions are held for events, allowing our musicians the opportunity of being considered as soloists. Parents, family members and other guests are always warmly invited to attend our regular events.
Year 3: pupils explore the musical elements through a broad range of creative and activities. They develop understanding of Listening, Composing, Performing and Appraising skills.
Year 4: pupils focus on Rhythm, Pitch and Musical Structure through inventing, exploring and composing, based on appreciation of a variety of musical styles and composers.
Year 5: pupils develop their musical awareness and vocabulary through extended listening and individual presentation. They also create and devise an extended composition.
Year 6: pupils reflect on the role of music within our society. They develop a creative understanding of the features of other musical traditions and cultures and develop their performance skills, working towards a Year 6 Spring Recital.
