The Salcombe Curriculum
Curriculum Overview
The Curriculum
Salcombe's curriculum is tailored to the needs of the pupils and their future aspirations. While the National Curriculum is a useful starting point, departments will adapt and enhance their programmes of study to ensure that every pupil is motivated, inspired and challenged. In addition to the core subjects of English and Mathematics, Salcombe syllabus includes Science, Geography, History, French, Music, ICT, Art, Drama, Design and Technology, PSHE and PE and Games; it also includes a the 'Virtue Project' values programme.
For detailed teaching information, please see our individual subject pages. For further information about any aspect of the Salcombe School Curriculum, please contact: The Director of Studies
Classes
Classes are small with setting employed in Mathematics. Children are encouraged to learn at the speed that suits them best and a very individual approach can be offered to every child. From Year 4, pupils are organised into year group bands of mathematical.
At every level, we strive to encourage our pupils to be independent learners, well-prepared for the next stage in their development. By Year 6the curriculum is planned largely, though not entirely, according to the Scholarship and Common Entrance requirements of the leading independent senior schools.
Our approach is designed to help pupils:
- enjoy a happy and secure learning environment where they are valued:
- develop lively, enquiring minds where they question rather than merely accept:
- acquire knowledge and understanding which will equip them for future challenges: and
- obtain skills that they can transfer to other subjects or situations.
Assessment
Parents receive an Academic Report at the end of the Summer and Winter Terms which detail achievement and effort and an Interim Report at the end of the Spring and Autumn Terms, detailing attitude and targeted academic areas for improvement.
Salcombe Upper School's strong tutorial system ensures that every child's success is celebrated and rewarded while those pupils whose reports are less satisfactory can be helped and supported by the more frequent referral to targeted goals.
There are two Parents' Meetings during the year and regular and open communication is encouraged between home and School.
